Key step in wastewater treatment

Rising demand across the UK for commercial and residential construction has led to land developments in close proximity to wastewater treatment sites. This, combined with increasing customer expectations, has resulted in the need to develop effective control measures to forestall odour complaints and to respond promptly when issues arise.

It is an imperative that water utilities and industrial companies reduce the impact of odour from their facilities on the local community. WRc’s treatment process experts provide water companies, regulators, contractors and industrial clients with a range of targeted services to achieve reliable and cost-effective odour management for sewer networks, wastewater and biosolids treatment and recycle/ disposal.

How we can help

WRc offers the following services to assist with your operations' odour management challenges.

  • Technical evaluation
    – Identification and evaluation of new and emerging odour control and monitoring technologies.
    – Dispute resolution and expert witness services.
  • Regulation/ Compliance
    – Review of odour management plans (OMPs) and practices.
  • Minimising the risk of odour from existing and proposed facilities
    – Monitor/quantify odour emissions from existing treatment processes and identify causes of odour emissions.
    – Predictions of the odour emissions for proposed new treatment facilities and their impact.
    – Atmospheric dispersion modelling to determine the effect of odours on the surrounding community.
    – Identification, assessment and optimisation of suitable odour control solutions in sewer networks and treatment facilities.

Ensuring your compliance with regulations

Don't just take our word for it

  • Odour dispersion model to assist planning permission
  • Residual hydrogen sulphide removal advice

A UK water utility needed to justify that there would be no increase in the effect of odour emissions when replacing a membrane bioreactor (MBR) with an oxidation ditch at a sewerage plant.

WRc carried out a site odour survey and created an odour dispersion model to estimate the emission effect of existing, versus the proposed process, on the local area. This modelling clearly showed that the effect of odour emissions would reduce.

The Coal Authority consulted WRc to independently review a proposed process of dosing hydrogen peroxide to remove residual hydrogen sulphide that was causing odour problems from treating mine water. WRc recommended and carried out field trials to determine the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Leading the field

Backed up by knowledge and experience gained over the last 30 years, the Odour Management User Group led by WRc enables promotion of best practice and innovation in the field. A wide range of operators and asset owners meet to share experiences and develop good practice through discussions with regulators, technology providers and WRc experts.

Through innovative design, combined with advances in odour treatment and sensing technologies, WRc provides expertise surrounding: optimising treatment and measurement systems; reduced odour by design; innovative management plans and technologies; and proactive training and customer initiatives.
