Wastewater Reuse & Water Recycling

Are you aware of the opportunities for water recycling or wastewater reuse within your treatment works?

Step towards a circular economy

The predicted UK population increase, in combination with drought periods brought on by climate change, will cause increasing stress on water availability.

Wastewater recycling and reuse could assist industrial users to minimise the need for fresh water intake while reducing the wastewater discharge, alleviating societal and environmental pressures.

For the municipal sector, the reuse of enhanced treated final effluent is largely being driven by restrictions on licenced abstraction of fresh water.

WRc can help those in the industrial and municipal sectors to establish options for a successful reuse scheme, advise on advanced treatment required for reuse, and provide customer and societal analysis.

Support from introduction to implementation

Industrial water reuse

Understanding of the wastewater streams is an important step for designing a successful reuse scheme. This includes knowledge of both the effluent water quality from the wastewater treatment plant and the constituent streams forming the wastewater. Our specialists can provide;

  • Reuse opportunity assessment: WRc can review the wastewater streams and provide recommendations on individual or blends of streams suitable for recycling and reuse.
  • Wastewater stream mapping services: WRc has the capability to map the wastewater streams to identify what the scope is for water reuse, wastewater minimisation and alternative treatment systems.
Wastewater reuse

Reusing wastewater from municipal treatment plants usually requires providing additional advanced treatment.

WRc has capability in providing advice on various advanced treatment technologies such as membrane technology, advanced oxidation processes (AOP) and ion exchange processes. Our specialists can provide:

  • Feasibility and optioneering studies.
  • Desk based technology assessment review.
  • Design, construction and operation of lab and pilot scale trials.
  • Conduction of concept level design of a reuse treatment plant.
  • Toxicology-based risk assessment (e.g., disinfection, reuse failures).
Identification of End-user

Guidance on requirements for potable and irrigation water reuse is well-established, but reuse for other non-potable offerings has less published guidance.

Our experts can also provide customer and societal analysis, and identification of challenges associated with end-user’s acceptance level for consuming reuse water.

Don't just take our word for it

  • Wastewater reuse
  • Treatment options

WRc was engaged by a UK water company to assess the reuse of the secondary treated wastewater to be used for direct municipal and industrial use. Our team conducted a detailed assessment of the flows and quality of the water streams available and identified the opportunities for the reuse of the wastewater, indicating water quality components that would either restrict usage or require additional treatment.

WRc was commissioned by a UK water research organisation to assess treatment options for removing pesticides. This included a series of trials to determine the effectiveness of UV treatment, Hydrogen peroxide and ozone, individually and in various advanced oxidation process combinations.
